Young people with learning disabilities can ‘Get Creative’ with dance and opera

Two of Leeds’ major arts organisations, Northern Ballet Theatre and Opera North are coming together in a rare collaboration to offer young people with learning disabilities, aged 10-16, the chance to get creative this summer and take centre stage during ‘From Here to There’, a five-day dance, music and arts project based on the themes of space and territory. The project will take place in the newly renovated Howard Assembly Rooms at Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 21st – Saturday 25th July 2009 and is part of Leeds City Council’s annual ‘Get Creative’ programme of events. Places must be booked in advance so to avoid disappointment contact Hannah Smith at Opera North on 0113 243 9999 or email  hannah.smith@operanorth.co.uk.  During the five-day project participants will work creatively with NBT Dance Education Officer Sophie Alder, Opera North musician Richard Taylor and designer Catherine Chapman, to explore the different spaces at Leeds Grand Theatre as well as imaginary worlds, inspired by computer games. The project will culminate on Saturday 25th July with the sharing of a video documenting the creative journey participants have been on throughout the project.  ‘Get Creative’ 2009 brings together a unique partnership between NBT, Leeds City Council, Opera North, Phoenix Dance Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse and Yorkshire Dance. It offers young people, who have not previously had opportunities in the arts, a chance to gain confidence, awareness and enjoyment from arts based activities.
