Leeds Voluntary Sector Learning Disabilities Forum Bulletin

Hello and happy new year.  Welcome to our first bulletin of 2009, we hope you find it useful.

If you have anything you would like to be included in the next bulletin please send us an email.

Feel free to pass this bulletin to anybody who may find it of interest and sign up to receive our bulletins and newsletters on our website, if you haven't already.

Whose Community is it Anyway?

The Forum is running an event with Mencap on 25th February that will look at how organisations can support people to be more involved in their community.

This promises to be a great event with lots of good speakers and it's free to all Forum members.  It will explore what community means to people, how organisations can support people to be more involved their community, and hear from people who have gained independence through their community.

To find out more about this it, and for information about how to book, go to the events area of our website.

Dandy Lion Club
Sunday 1 March 2009 from 2 – 5pm at West Yorkshire Playhouse

The Dandy Lion Club offers a range of creative arts activities to young people with learning disabilities who would normally have issues in accessing mainstream activities. Sessions in dance, music, singing, DJing, drama and visual arts will be run by professional artists. A sensory area will also be on offer, plus there’s the chance to show off some moves on the dance floor or sing on the open mic. We’d love you to join us!

There will also be plenty available for parents, carers and other members of the family to enjoy including face painting, relaxing massage and a chance to chill out and relax with the Sunday papers. Young people who have taken part in the creative sessions will be invited to perform a short piece of drama, dance or song for their families and friends at the close of the event.

Taking place over 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon at the heart of the fully accessible West Yorkshire Playhouse, this event is an inclusive and uplifting occasion. There will be plenty of friendly staff and volunteers from the Beautiful Octopus Club on hand to make participants feel welcome, although individual one-to-one support cannot be offered. The café will be open for soft drinks and snacks.

Funding for The Dandy Lion Club comes from: Wade’s Charity, George A Moore Foundation, The Constance Green Foundation, The Yorkshire Bank Charitable Trust and Leeds Building Society Charitable Foundation. We are hoping to continue developing this fantastic opportunity at West Yorkshire Playhouse’s new space for young people – First Floor, which opens in 2009.

Tickets are available now at West Yorkshire Playhouse Box Office priced at £4 per person for 14 – 25s with learning disabilities and their families. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to our consultation on ticket price. We aim to keep the price as low as possible, but ask that all people attending the Dandy Lion Club pay the same fee whether they are a young person, parent, carer or another member of the family. We hope you all enjoy this event.
