Join the Big Care Debate The Government has published ‘Shaping the Future of Care Together’, a Green Paper on the reform of the adult care and support system in England. Care and support helps people do everyday things like living in their own homes, working, shopping and caring for their family, which most of us take for granted. The current system is struggling to meet the needs of our society. Designed back in the 1940s, when life expectancy was shorter and social attitudes and expectations were very different, it urgently needs updating. Shaping the Future of Care Together spells out a vision to build a National Care Service that is fair, simple and affordable for all adults in England. It sets out the options for service reform, and how the new system could be organised and paid for. Its publication marked the start of the Big Care Debate, a consultation which will continue until 13 November 2009. The Government wants to hear as many views as possible. We will be holding three Big Care Debate workshops in Leeds to discuss the Government’s proposals and formulate responses to the consultation questions. We are inviting members of the public, partner organisations and Adult Social Care customers and staff and to attend one of these events: - Thursday 24 September 1.00pm - 4.30pm Sullivan Room, Leeds Town Hall
- Monday 28 September 9.30am -1.00pm Sullivan Room, Leeds Town Hall
- Thursday 1 October 1.00pm - 4.30pm Albert Room, Leeds Town Hall

People Development Strategy LaunchThe event will take place on 29th September at Weetwood Hall, starting at 9.30am and finishing at 3.30pm. Lunch will be provided. The strategy has actions within five priority areas: 1. Remodelling the workforce2. Creating a high performance culture3. Learning and development4. Developing leaders and managers5. Recruitment, retention and career progression On 29th September, as well as launching the strategy itself, the day will be the first planned development network for the independent sector. This is a quarterly network for people from the independent sector to meet colleagues, share best practice, be up to date with policies and plans, and share knowledge from other areas of the region and country. The network is one of the many ideas suggested during the workshops earlier this year that we are committed to supporting. There are approximately 100 places only - they will be given on a first come first served basis. To reserve your place, please contact bsc.tem.services.trades.and.personal@leeds.gov.uk or by telephone on 0113 2475570. If you have any general queries about the event, please contact Ingrid Steele, ingridsteele@inbox.com, 07753 835 395 (available from 7 September).
